ASTR 10 - Introduction to 天文学: The Solar System    ( 3.00 -单位)
Introduction to history and physical principles of astronomy, focusing on our Solar System. Includes: constellations; distance scales; historical development of astronomy; gravitation; motion of the Earth, 月亮, and Planets; astronomical tools; formation and evolution of the solar system; physical properties, 大气, and evolution of the Earth, 月亮, 和行星 within the solar system; asteroids, 彗星, and other small bodies; discovery of extra-solar planets; possibilities for life beyond Earth. Designed for non-majors in mathematics or a physical science. A companion science lab, 天文学 30, is also available.

Student 学习 Outcomes (SLO)
  1. explain physical principles relevant to the solar system and its formation, as well as those relevant to the search for extrasolar planets,
  2. use quantitative reasoning to determine relationships between physical quantities in astronomy,
  3. describe the ways in which scientific principles have shaped the modern world and relate to daily life.

ASTR 20 - Introduction to 天文学: Stars and the Universe    ( 3.00 -单位)
Introduction to the study of stars, 星系, 和宇宙学. Includes the nature of light and matter, 望远镜, 光谱学, stellar formation and evolution, 星系, 类星体, 和宇宙学. Designed for non-majors in mathematics or a physical science. A companion science lab, 天文学 30, is also available.

Student 学习 Outcomes (SLO)
  1. explain physical principles relevant to light, 望远镜, stars, 星系, 和宇宙学.;
  2. use quantitative reasoning to determine relationships between physical quantities in astronomy;
  3. describe the ways in which scientific principles have shaped the modern world and relate to daily life.

ASTR 30 - Introduction to 天文学 Lab    ( 1.00 -单位)
Introduction to laboratory principles and techniques in astronomy. Includes operation of local and/or remote robotic 望远镜, calculation of angular sizes, 光谱学, 月球阶段, 日食, computer simulations, digital image analysis and processing, motions of the sun, 月亮, 和行星, and identification of constellations and stars in the seasonal night skies.

Student 学习 Outcomes (SLO)
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between precision and accuracy through a lab report or capstone survey
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of angular size and resolution with 望远镜 through a lab activity, 帐面价值, 项目, or hands-on demonstration using a telescope
  3. Relate individual lab exercises to the key concepts in astronomy as well as in the process of science.

ASTR 45 - Descriptive 天文学    ( 3.00 -单位)
Survey of 天文学 at a descriptive level, focusing on current topics of interest including exploration of the planets, 黑洞, detection of extra-solar planets, search for intelligent life in the universe, astronomy in film and literature, as well as identification of seasonal constellations. Designed for non-majors in mathematics or a physical science.

Student 学习 Outcomes (SLO)
  1. Describe the search for life beyond the Earth, identify the requirements for life in space, and relate the current scientific attempts to locate signs of intelligent life.
  2. Identify 5 prominent constellations for each season (Winter, 春天, 夏天, Fall) and at least 3 bright stars by name for each season.
  3. Describe the process of science illustrated through current exploration and discoveries in 天文学.
